From escaping The Maze, Thomas was certain that it would mean freedom for the Gladers and himself. But WICKED hasn't finished with them just yet as Phase Two has just begun- The Scorch. Their survival depends on the Gladers' destruction and they're determination to survive. If you were confused by the first installment of this sci-fi/post apocalyptic world of The Maze Runner, then the sequel will certainly confuse you even further. The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch- the most burned out region of the world, and WICKED (World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department) has ensured the variables are adjusted to make this almost impossible..
Like with The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials is a fast-paced, mind-blowing, action filled book. There's not "settling in" with this book, you're immediately put right in the center of the Gladers' predicament. However I did feel that like many sequels it was perhaps a filler book, a lot of unanswered questions rattled through my mind and I guess by the end of it I just wanted to immediately get stuck into Death Cure (the following book). What I really do love about this series so far is its relation to speculations as to how the world is going to end by the means of global warming/climate change- such as the temperatures rising vastly in parts of the world (the equator or 'The Scorch), water levels rising, and the prediction of unity of the most "powerful" countries creating a master government so to speak- WICKED. It's definitely one of those books that make you think "wow maybe this sort of situation could occur in the future!"- it gets you thinking a great deal anyway!
